Following a tooth extraction, it is crucial for a blood clot to form in order to stop the bleeding and start the healing process. Bite down on a gauze pad for 30-45 minutes immediately after the procedure. If bleeding continues, place another gauze pad and bite down firmly for an additional 30 minutes. Repeat as needed to stop the bleeding.
Once the blood clot has formed, it is important to avoid disturbing or dislodging it. Refrain from rinsing vigorously, using straws, smoking, consuming alcohol, or brushing teeth near the extraction site for 72 hours. These activities can dislodge or dissolve the clot, delaying the healing process. Additionally, limit strenuous exercise for the next 24 hours to prevent increased blood pressure and potential bleeding from the extraction site.
After the tooth extraction, you may experience pain and swelling. To minimize swelling, apply an ice pack or a bag of frozen peas or corn to the area. Take prescribed pain medications as needed, and the swelling should go down within 48 hours.
Follow the instructions for pain medication and contact our office if it doesn't seem to be effective. If antibiotics are prescribed, be sure to finish the entire course even if symptoms improve. Stay hydrated and eat soft, nutritious foods on the day of the extraction, and resume your normal dental routine after 24 hours, including brushing and flossing daily.
