After Exposure of an Impacted Tooth
Please avoid touching the wound. If surgical packing was inserted, do not disturb it as it helps keep the tooth exposed. If the packing becomes dislodged or falls out, do not panic but contact our office for further instructions.
Bleeding
It is normal to experience some bleeding or redness in the saliva for the first 24 hours. If you notice excessive bleeding that fills your mouth quickly, apply pressure by biting down on a gauze pad directly on the bleeding wound for 30 minutes. If bleeding persists, please call for additional instructions.
Swelling
It is common to experience swelling after surgery. To reduce swelling, place an ice pack or a plastic bag filled with ice cubes on your cheek near the surgical site. Apply the ice consistently for the first 36 hours.
Diet
Stay hydrated by drinking lots of fluids. Avoid hot drinks and hard foods. Stick to soft foods and liquids on the day of your surgery. Resume your normal diet as soon as you can, unless instructed otherwise.
Pain
It is important to start taking pain medication once the local anesthetic wears off. For moderate pain, you can take one or two tablets of Tylenol or Extra Strength Tylenol every 3-4 hours. Alternatively, you can take Ibuprofen (Advil or Motrin) instead of Tylenol. Ibuprofen over the counter comes in 200 mg tablets, and you can take 2-3 tablets four times daily, not exceeding 3200mg daily for adults. Please consult our practice for individuals under 18. Do not take both medications at the same time.
For severe pain, take the prescribed medication as directed. Do not take any of the above medications if you are allergic to them or have been advised not to take them by your doctor. Avoid driving or operating machinery, and refrain from consuming alcoholic beverages. Pain or discomfort after surgery should gradually improve each day. Antibiotics
Make sure to follow the instructions and take the prescribed antibiotics to prevent infection.
Oral Hygiene
Maintaining oral hygiene is crucial for proper healing. Make sure to clean your mouth thoroughly after every meal, starting the day after your surgery. Brush your teeth as usual if possible, and rinse with warm salt water (1 teaspoon of salt in a cup of warm water) six times a day. Keep up with this routine until your healing process is finished. Remember, a clean wound heals more effectively and quickly.
Activity
After surgery, limit physical activities to avoid throbbing or bleeding. If you experience these symptoms, stop exercising. Remember that your normal food intake is reduced and exercise may make you feel weak. If you feel lightheaded, stop exercising.
